5.7 LT1 Camaro Firebird p0336 Code Still on After Replacing the crank sensor

So I have noticed that there are a lot of these vehicles out there and there are a ton of them that have the p0366 code and people often times read that this code is indicating the crank angle sensor so with out even testing it they just go ahead and replace the sensor which is always a bad idea and a great way to waste money and rarely fixes the code.

It is very easy to test the crank angle sensor and if you would like to know how just click here to see my right up with pictures on step by step how to test the crank angle sensor.

If you would like to understand better how the whole GM opti spark system works Click Here for my write up.

Anyway the p0336 code can be on for several different reasons.

  1. Test the crank angle sensor to verify that it is good and not contributing the problem
  2. Check the ground wire that is on the driver side of the car in the front right behind the cooling fans the easiest way to access this is to jack the car up get under it and while looking up you will see one braided cable ground attached to the inside middle of the frame rail and right above it you will see a small gauge black ground wire. Test this wire for continuity because if there is any break in this wire it will give you the po366 code every time and it gets damaged a lot of times when the cooling fans are removed from the vehicle.
  3. Test the distributor because if the low frequency signal is not right when the ecm is comparing the crank signal sensor to the signal of the distributor for the opti spark and the signals do not line up it will throw the same code.
  4. Click here if you need a step by step of how to test the distributor.
  5. There is a very slight and I mean very slight chance that the ecm is bad and there is no real good way of testing it. So please remember that the chances of the ecm being the cause of your problem are very very slim.
